Who are we looking for?

Based out of our office in Calgary, we are looking for an experienced, hands-on Director of Finance to oversee all financial activities within our publicly traded company. This leadership role combines strategic oversight with active participation in daily financial operations. The Director will manage both internal financial operations—such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, profit and loss (P&L) reporting, budgeting, and financial analysis—and customer-specific financial services related to our lottery program, including reconciliation, expenses, and draw reporting.

The ideal candidate will possess a financial designation (CPA, CMA, or equivalent) and have deep experience in both the corporate finance and regulatory environments, including the specific demands placed on publicly traded companies. The Director of Finance will ensure that all activities are compliant with regulatory standards and aligned with the company’s overall business objectives.

As a key contributor, you'll provide:

Oversight & Management of Finance Operations
  • Supervise and mentor a team of finance professionals responsible for the company’s day-to-day financial activities, ensuring that processes are executed accurately and efficiently.
  • Oversee all general accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger management, and financial statement preparation.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of the Profit & Loss (P&L) statement, balance sheet, and cash flow.
  • Lead the preparation of annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP and other regulatory standards for a publicly traded company.
  • Work closely with the Controller to develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls, supporting compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
  • Ensure accurate preparation and filing of tax returns and compliance with all relevant tax laws.
  • Prepare, analyze, and present monthly and quarterly financial results, variance analysis, and performance trends to executive leadership.
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Analysis
  • Lead the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes, working closely with the Controller and departmental leaders to ensure accuracy and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Conduct financial analysis to identify key business drivers, trends, and opportunities to enhance profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Oversee the development of long-range financial plans and scenario analyses to support strategic decision-making.
Lottery Finance & Customer Support
  • Manage and monitor customer lottery financial processes, including reconciliation, expense tracking, and draw reporting, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate reconciliation of all lottery funds, including expenses, revenue recognition, and customer account management.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support lottery customer needs, financial reporting, and compliance with applicable regulatory standards.
Strategic Financial Leadership:
  • Provide strategic financial insights and recommendations regarding financial performance, capital allocation, and future growth opportunities.
  • Support the President in business planning, forecasting, and in identifying areas for cost optimization and risk management.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure alignment of financial goals with operational activities and that financial forecasts align with corporate objectives.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead and develop a high-performing finance team, setting clear expectations for roles, responsibilities, and performance standards.
  • Mentor and provide professional development opportunities for team members to enhance skills and maintain a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Establish key performance metrics and manage team performance to achieve departmental goals.
Compliance & Audit Management
  • Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements, maintaining accurate records and supporting documentation for audits.
  • Act as the primary contact for external auditors, facilitating audit preparation and review to ensure timely completion.
  • Implement and monitor financial controls to prevent and detect errors or irregularities, working closely with the Controller to maintain oversight and integrity.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. A professional financial designation (CPA, CMA, or equivalent) is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 9 years in accounting and finance, with at least 5 years in a management or Controller role.
  • Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in financial software (ERP systems) and advanced Excel skills; knowledge of GAAP and IFRS standards.
  • Leadership: Proven experience managing and developing finance teams, with excellent organizational and people management skills.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct detailed financial analysis, develop actionable insights, and communicate complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Compliance: Familiarity with financial regulations relevant to both internal operations and client-based activities, particularly for the nonprofit or gaming sectors.
